Description of artwork:
In 2023, we faced an incredibly challenging year as a community. We felt the weight of being unjustly portrayed, our very identities questioned, and our destinies hanging precariously in the hands of others. The concept behind the 2024 Our Survival Day design was born out of the necessity to acknowledge and honor the profound heartache that enveloped us.
The heart-shaped dot design encapsulates the essence of all indigenous communities, each dot representing a unique cultural identity. A permanent rift divides the heart, symbolising the unhealable wounds we carry. This image is presented in a myriad of colors, each carrying its own emotional weight. The deep red embodies anger and heartbreak, the blue reflects the profound sadness and loss, while the green signifies the ongoing journey of rebuilding and healing.
Even in the vibrant array of colors, the enduring break in the heart remains, a testament to the fact that our pain will persist regardless of where we find ourselves on the path to healing.
